Mount Ibu Erupts on Tuesday Night, Alert Level Remains at Waspada

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday (23/1/2024) at 22.09 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 3 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 1,000 meters above the peak (2,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 79 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 23, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 18 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 22-90 seconds.

Then, there were 60 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds, and 6 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-25 millimeters and durations of 46-155 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 110 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (48 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 16 times.
