Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Ash Reaches 500 Meters High

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at 8:48 PM WITA. This marks the second eruption in the past week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash plume reached an observed height of approximately 500 meters above the summit (2,084 meters above sea level).

The ash plume was observed to be gray with moderate intensity, heading north and northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 107 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Alert Level IV (Awas). Observations of seismic activity from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WITA on December 10, 2024, showed 2 instances of puffing/exhalation tremors with amplitudes of 6.6-14.8 millimeters and durations of 36-59 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 8 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.9-10.5 millimeters and durations of 63-299 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 4.4 millimeters, an S-P time of 1.5 seconds, and a duration of 10 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists to refrain from any activity within a 6-kilometer radius of the eruption center and within a 7-kilometer sectoral area to the southwest, north, and northeast.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,851 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,415), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 972 times.
