Mount Dukono Erupts Thursday Morning, Status Remains on Alert

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (7/11/2024) at 09.06 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 12 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,200 meters above the peak or 2,287 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the south. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Dukono is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on November 7, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 183 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-14 millimeters and durations of 35.96-73.59 seconds.

Then, there were 2 local tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 27 millimeters, S-P 7.42-7.72 seconds, and durations of 47.62-53.53 seconds; and 15 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-14 millimeters, S-P 10.52-24.61 seconds, and durations of 50.8-100.85 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 4,867 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,959 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 44 times.
