Increased access to electricity/electrification and the growth of the national economy have also led to a rise in public electricity consumption. Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), per capita electricity consumption reached 994.41 kilowatt-hours (kWh) by September 2017. This figure is up 3.98 percent from the end of 2016, which stood at 956.36 kWh. Furthermore, the development of electric vehicles will increase future electricity demand.
Installed power plant capacity reached 60 Gigawatts (GW) by September 2017. This figure is up 7 GW from the end of 2014, when it was only 53 GW. Electrification in 2017 reached 93.08 percent of the target of 92.75 percent by the end of the year.
The government plans to simplify electricity tariff classifications. Customers with 900 VA (non-subsidized) will be moved to 1,300 VA with a fixed tariff of Rp 1,352/kWh. Customers with 1,300 VA, 2,200 VA, 3,300 VA, and 4,400 VA will be moved to 5,500 VA with a tariff of Rp 1,467.28/kWh. Customers with power above 5,500 VA up to 13,200 VA will be moved to 13,200 VA with a tariff of Rp 1,467.28/kWh + VAT, and customers above 13,200 VA will have a loss-of-power tariff of Rp 1,467.28/kWh + VAT.
