The Central Statistics Agency reported that 24.3 million people departed from Java and Sumatra by train in August 2022. This figure is down 5.64 percent compared to the previous month.
The majority of these train passengers were Jabodetabek commuters, totaling 19.4 million people or 79.83 percent of the total train passengers. Passenger numbers decreased in all regions: Jabodetabek (down 0.41 percent), non-Jabodetabek Java (down 21.93 percent), and Sumatra (down 21.54 percent).
Cumulatively, the number of train passengers from January to August 2022 reached 167.2 million people, a 77.48 percent increase compared to the same period in 2021. Passenger numbers increased in all regions: Jabodetabek (up 64.21 percent), non-Jabodetabek Java (up 161.75 percent), and Sumatra (up 64.74 percent).
On the other hand, the amount of goods transported by train in August 2022 was 5.6 million tons, up 1.88 percent compared to the previous month. Most of these goods were recorded in Sumatra, totaling 4.5 million tons or 80.72 percent of the total goods transported by train.
The amount of goods increased in all regions: non-Jabodetabek Java (up 0.94 percent) and Sumatra (up 2.11 percent). From January to August 2022, the amount of goods transported by train reached 39.7 million tons, a 15.18 percent increase compared to the same period in 2021.
Increases occurred in all regions: non-Jabodetabek Java (up 15.67 percent) and Sumatra (up 15.05 percent).
