Trains are one of the modes of transportation used by Indonesian people. Year after year, the use of this land transportation has shown an upward trend, coinciding with improvements in service. However, this mode of transportation has not yet been able to serve all areas of the country and remains concentrated on Java and Sumatra.
Data from the Central Statistics Agency recorded the number of train passengers in 2017 reaching 393.27 million, an increase of 11.78% compared to the previous year. This figure comprises 315.85 million passengers in Jabodetabek, 70.51 million passengers in Java (outside Jabodetabek), and 6.91 million passengers in Sumatra. Commuter line (KRL) passengers in and around Jakarta still dominate train passengers in the country, reaching approximately 80% of all train passengers.
For the January-July 2018 period, the number of train passengers reached 242.93 million, which is 61.77% of the total passengers for the previous year. Jabodetabek commuter line users reached 194.51 million passengers, while users in Java outside Jabodetabek reached 43.96 million passengers and 4.47 million passengers in Sumatra.
