Airports Council International (ACI) has again compiled a list of the busiest airports worldwide in 2023, based on passenger numbers.
Atlanta International Airport in the United States (US) ranked first, with 104.65 million passengers in 2023. This represents an 11.7% increase from 2022. ACI noted that Atlanta has held the top spot since at least 2019.
Second place went to Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates, with 86.99 million passengers in 2023 – nearly 87 million. This volume represents a 31.7% surge from 2022.
Dallas International Airport, US, ranked third with 81.75 million passengers. Although this is an 11.4% increase from 2022, Dallas dropped one position this year.
"Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport topped the ranking, followed by Dubai International Airport for the first time, surpassing Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in third place," ACI wrote on its website, as quoted on Monday (April 22, 2024).
London, UK, took fourth place with 79.18 million passengers, while Tokyo, Japan, ranked fifth with 78.71 million. Tokyo's ranking showed significant growth this year.
"The biggest jump in the top 10 was recorded by Tokyo Haneda, soaring from 16th position in 2022 to 5th in 2023," ACI wrote.
The remaining airports in the top ten were Denver International Airport (US), Istanbul (Turkey), Los Angeles (US), Chicago (US), and New Delhi (India), with passenger volumes as shown in the accompanying graph.
ACI stated that the top 10 airports account for almost 10% of global traffic, totaling 806 million passengers. US airports dominated the list.
Global passenger numbers in 2023 approached 8.5 billion, a 27.2% increase from 2022. This represents a significant recovery, reaching 93.8% of pre-pandemic levels (2019).
"In particular, the recovery of international traffic is approaching that of domestic traffic, highlighting its crucial role in driving the industry's resurgence and expansion," ACI wrote.
ACI explained that global air travel in 2023 was largely driven by the international segment, along with several other factors. These include the reopening of China and an increased propensity to travel despite challenging macroeconomic conditions.
This airport ranking was compiled from data from over 2,600 airports in more than 180 countries and territories globally.
ACI claims that this data collection positions it as a credible leading authority on airport travel demand, ensuring the highest accuracy and reliability in its rankings.
