The income of online motorcycle taxi drivers (ojol) in Jakarta, Indonesia, has been declining annually from 2014 to 2018. This is evident in the results of a recent survey conducted by Litbang Kompas.

According to the survey, in 2014, the average income of ojol drivers reached Rp10.94 million per month. However, the following year, it dropped by 25% to Rp8.25 million per month in 2015.

The average income of ojol drivers decreased further by 23% in both 2016 and 2017. Then, it fell by another 16% to Rp4.11 million per month in 2018.

The Litbang Kompas survey was conducted on January 14-15, 2019, involving 200 ojol drivers from Gojek and Grab in Jakarta, with an equal representation from each company.

Income was calculated based on the average gross income of full-time respondents, based on the year they started working as ojol drivers.

Meanwhile, according to a 2019 survey by the Research and Development Agency (Balitbang) of the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub), the majority (34.5%) of ojol drivers earned only between Rp1 million and Rp2 million per month. A very small proportion earned between Rp4 million and Rp5 million per month.

Djoko Setijowarno, Head of Advocacy and Community Affairs at the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI), believes that the low average income of online motorcycle taxi drivers contradicts the promises made by the application providers.
