Based on data from the Indonesian National Police's Korlantas (Korps Lalu Lintas), published by the Ministry of Transportation, the number of traffic accidents in Indonesia reached 103,645 cases in 2021. This figure is higher than the 2020 data, which amounted to 100,028 cases.
In 2021, traffic accidents resulted in 25,266 fatalities and material losses reaching Rp246 billion. There were also 10,553 seriously injured and 117,913 slightly injured victims.
By vehicle type, motorcycles were most frequently involved in traffic accidents, accounting for 73%. Freight vehicles were second, with 12%.
Budi Setiyadi, Secretary of the Directorate General of Land Transportation, revealed that approximately 90% of goods transportation currently occurs via road.
"This causes problems such as high accident rates, congestion, over-dimension and overloading (ODOL), infrastructure damage, and air pollution. However, the current focus is on ODOL because it also impacts other issues," said Budi Setiyadi at the Road Transportation Safety Experts Meeting on Wednesday, March 23, 2022.
Therefore, the Directorate General of Land Transportation is taking steps to address the ODOL problem, including motor vehicle normalization, mandatory use of electronic motor vehicle testing certificates, promoting the implementation of safety management systems for public transportation companies, law enforcement, and building safety partnerships.
Since 2017, the trend of traffic accidents in Indonesia has been fluctuating. The highest number of cases occurred in 2019, reaching 116,411, while the lowest was in 2020, at 100,028 cases.
