Toyota remained the best-selling car throughout the first half of 2017. Gaikindo data shows that this Japanese car manufacturer recorded sales of 195,288 units, or 36.6 percent of total domestic four-wheeled vehicle sales, which amounted to 533,570 units.

Daihatsu came in second with sales reaching 94,287 units, or about 17.7 percent of the total. Followed by Honda with 93,262 units, or 17.5 percent of total domestic automotive sales. The top 10 best-selling car brands of 2017 controlled nearly 98 percent of the national automotive market share, and all were automotive manufacturers from Japan.

The arrival of Ramadan and the long Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2017 caused national car sales in June 2017 to shrink by 29 percent to 66,389 units from the previous month's 93,775 units. June 2017 car sales were also the lowest since the beginning of the year.
