Distribution of Package Shipment Destinations Across Indonesian Islands in 2024

According to a report by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), the volume of goods shipped by Indonesian freight forwarding companies in 2024 reached 8.6 thousand tons. Meanwhile, courier services delivered around 826 tons.

BPS explained that freight forwarding companies are businesses engaged in shipping goods with medium to large capacity to various regions.

In contrast, courier companies deliver small to medium-sized packages or letters via land, sea, and air transportation.

Nationally, shipments by freight forwarding and courier companies were mostly sent to other provinces, accounting for the largest proportion at 47.14%. Intra-provincial shipments followed at 40.96%.

“Meanwhile, international shipments accounted for 11.90%, indicating this sector’s contribution to international logistics activities,” BPS stated.

The following is a breakdown of the percentage distribution of shipment destinations by freight forwarding and courier companies by island in Indonesia in 2024:

Sumatra

• Outside the province: 46.19%
• Within the province: 44.56%
• Abroad: 9.26%

Java and Bali

• Outside the province: 46.78%
• Within the province: 39.76%
• Abroad: 13.46%

Kalimantan

• Outside the province: 44.55%
• Within the province: 52.64%
• Abroad: 2.81%

Sulawesi

• Outside the province: 55.94%
• Within the province: 39.78%
• Abroad: 4.29%

Nusa Tenggara, Maluku, and Papua

• Outside the province: 51.48%
• Within the province: 46.63%
• Abroad: 1.89%.

BPS also calculated that the average revenue of shipping and courier companies in Indonesia in 2024 amounted to Rp23.7 billion per year.
