Train Passengers in Indonesia Decreased in September 2025

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were 45.02 million train passengers in Indonesia in September 2025.

This figure includes train passengers on Java Island and non-Java regions (Sumatra and Sulawesi), including airport trains, MRT, LRT, and the Whoosh high-speed train.

The number of national train passengers in September 2025 decreased by 1.2% compared to the previous month (month-to-month/mtm).

This decrease occurred across almost all train lines, except for trains outside Java Island.

Below are the details of train passenger numbers in Indonesia by segment in September 2025, along with changes compared to the previous month:

• Jabodetabek commuter trains: 28.74 million passengers, down 0.71% (mtm)
• Trains on Java Island non-Jabodetabek: 7.64 million passengers, down 1.45% (mtm)
• Trains in non-Java regions: 547.1 thousand passengers, up 0.13% (mtm)
• Airport trains: 756.3 thousand passengers, down 3.79% (mtm)
• MRT trains: 3.91 million passengers, down 1.81% (mtm)
• LRT trains: 2.96 million passengers, down 2.66% (mtm)
• Whoosh high-speed train: 473.6 thousand passengers, down 11.29% (mtm)

Despite a monthly decrease, national train passengers increased this year when calculated cumulatively.

The cumulative number of train passengers from January to September 2025 reached 402.5 million people, an increase of 8.49% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, President Prabowo Subianto has allocated a budget of Rp5 trillion for PT KAI (Persero) to enable them to add more train sets to the Jabodetabek KRL Commuter Line network.

According to Prabowo, PT KAI President Director Bobby Rasyidin had proposed a budget for this purpose.

The funds required for the procurement of one 12-car train set amount to US$9 million or the equivalent of Rp150.25 billion (assuming Rp16,695 per US$).

"He (KAI President Director) proposed Rp4.8 trillion, but I approved Rp5 trillion," Prabowo said at Tanah Abang Station, Jakarta, as reported by Katadata.co.id, Tuesday (November 4, 2025).

This budget is planned to be used to add 30 train sets. Prabowo has given a one-year deadline to realize this plan.
