PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, reported that 89,166 foreign nationals (WNA) used train services in August 2025. This is claimed to be the highest record in the last two years.
According to KAI, this surge was triggered by the global holiday season and international cultural events in Indonesia, such as the Jember Fashion Carnaval (JFC).
"The JFC also encouraged tourists to explore further, especially towards Banyuwangi with Kawah Ijen, Baluran National Park, and exotic beaches," wrote KAI in its press release on Saturday, September 13, 2025.
During this period, Yogyakarta was the train departure station with the most foreign tourists, reaching 21,657 people.
This was followed by Gambir, Bandung, and Banyuwangi Kota in the top 10 departure stations. The details are as follows:
1. Yogyakarta: 21,657 passengers
2. Gambir: 13,349 passengers
3. Bandung: 7,431 passengers
4. Probolinggo: 4,982 passengers
5. Surabaya Gubeng: 4,317 passengers
6. Malang: 4,248 passengers

8. Semarang Tawang: 2,816 passengers
9. Lempuyangan: 1,864 passengers
10. Banyuwangi Kota: 1,696 passengers.
"Trains are a popular choice because they offer comfortable, punctual journeys and directly connect tourists to various prime destinations in Java and Sumatra," said KAI Vice President of Public Relations, Anne Purba.
Cumulatively, the number of foreign national passengers recorded was 453,030. This figure grew by 10.69% year-on-year from the same period last year (409,272 passengers).
