The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recorded 66 commercial airliner accidents worldwide in 2023. The ratio was 1.87 accidents per one million flights.
While the absolute number of accidents increased from 64 in 2022, the ratio decreased from 2.05.
ICAO reported a 3.1% increase in the total number of accidents from 2022 to 2023. "Flight departures also increased by approximately 13% during the same period," wrote ICAO, as quoted on Saturday (February 1, 2024).
The highest number of accidents and the highest ratio over the past five years occurred in 2019, with 114 accidents and a ratio of 2.94 per one million flights.
The ICAO report does not yet include the recent accident between an American Airlines plane and a United States Army helicopter.
According to *Katadata*, the tragedy resulted in 67 deaths, making it the deadliest US air disaster in over 20 years.
However, US authorities have not yet definitively determined the cause of the collision near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Both federal and local US authorities state that the plane and helicopter were flying standard flight patterns. US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also stated there were no communication disruptions. Similarly, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin said there was nothing unusual before the accident.
"Everything was proceeding normally until the accident occurred," Youngkin said, as quoted by *Reuters* on Friday (January 31).
