Number of Passengers on Indonesian Railways up to August 2024

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 35.8 million in August 2024.

This figure includes train passengers on Java and Sumatra islands, including airport trains.

The number of national train passengers in August 2024 decreased by 5.45% compared to the previous month (month-to-month/mtm), which reached 37.9 million passengers.

"One of the reasons is that August 2024 has entered the low season, after the school holiday period in July 2024, and many students have returned to school," said the Acting Head of BPS, Amalia A. Widyasanti, in a press conference on Tuesday (1/10/2024).

In August 2024, the majority of passengers were from Jabodetabek commuter train users, namely 28.2 million people or 78.76% of the total national train passengers. However, the volume decreased by 3.53% (mtm).

Similarly, the number of train passengers on Java Island outside Jabodetabek decreased by 12.74% (mtm) to 6.45 million people, on Sumatra Island decreased by 7.74% (mtm) to 491,400 people, and airport trains decreased by 7.19% (mtm) to 659,700 people.

Cumulatively, the number of national train passengers from January to August 2024 reached 277.5 million people, an increase of 14.87% compared to the same period last year (cumulative-to-cumulative/c-t-c).

Cumulative increases occurred in the Jabodetabek region by 15.21% (ctc), Java outside Jabodetabek by 12.94% (ctc), and airport trains by 65.91% (ctc). Meanwhile, the number of passengers on the Sumatra route decreased by 12.54% (ctc).
