According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in July 2024, the number of train passengers in Indonesia reached 37.9 million, encompassing passengers on Java and Sumatra islands, including airport trains.
The total number increased by 8.21% compared to May 2024 (month-to-month/mtm), and it is the highest achievement since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.
BPS Deputy for Distribution and Service Statistics, Pudji Ismartini, explained that the increase in the volume of train passengers was partly driven by the school holiday period which lasted until mid-July 2024.
"In line with that, PT KAI provided ticket discounts which also stimulated people to travel," said Pudji Ismartini in an online press conference on Monday (2/9/2024).
In addition, the greater number of working days in July is also considered to have influenced the increase in the number of train passengers, especially on commuterline services.
In July 2024, the majority of passengers came from Jabodetabek commuter train users, namely 29.24 million people or 77.19% of the total national train passengers. Their volume grew by 9.35% month-on-month (mtm).
Similarly, the number of train passengers in non-Jabodetabek Java increased by 4.32% (mtm) to 7.39 million people, on Sumatra Island it increased by 2.38% (mtm) to 532,600 people, and airport trains increased by 8.52% (mtm) to 710,800 people.
Cumulatively, the number of national train passengers from January to July 2024 reached 241.7 million people, a surge of 15.19% compared to the same period last year (cumulative-to-cumulative/c-t-c).
Cumulative increases occurred in the Jabodetabek region by 15.56% (ctc), non-Jabodetabek Java by 13.07% (ctc), and airport trains by 68.21% (ctc). Meanwhile, the number of passengers in Sumatra decreased by 12.14% (ctc).
