According to data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), ASEAN car sales reached 1.49 million units in the first half of 2024.
This represents an 8.9% decrease year-on-year (yoy) compared to the 1.64 million units sold in the first half of the previous year.
The AAF compiled this data from seven ASEAN member countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
In the first half of 2024, Indonesian car sales reached 408,012 units, representing 27% of total ASEAN sales.
Despite having the largest market share, Indonesian car sales during this period fell by 19.4% (yoy).
Malaysia came in second with 390,296 units sold, a 6.6% increase (yoy). Thailand followed with 307,671 units sold, down 24.2% (yoy).
Meanwhile, the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Myanmar each recorded car sales of less than 250,000 units in this semester, as shown in the graph.
The AAF also noted that car production in Southeast Asia in the first half of 2024 totaled 1.85 million units, down 12.7% (yoy).
Thailand was the largest car producer in the region, with 761,240 units. Indonesia followed with 561,772 units, and Malaysia with 392,052 units.
