Based on a survey, the Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) predicts that 107.63 million people will travel during the 2023-2024 Christmas and New Year (Nataru) holiday.
Kemenhub's Special Staff, Adita Irawati, stated that this number is a 143% increase compared to the 44.17 million Nataru travelers last year.
"(This prediction) certainly hasn't reached pre-Covid-19 levels. So, (this prediction) is nearing normalcy," said Adita, as reported by Tempo.co on Monday, December 11, 2023.
However, Adita did not specify the number of people who traveled during Nataru before the pandemic.
The Kemenhub survey also found that the main reason people are traveling during this year's Nataru holiday is for leisure trips to tourist destinations (45.29%).
Others are going home for the holidays (30.15%), celebrating Nataru in their hometowns (18.98%), traveling for work/assignments (2.42%), and other reasons (3.16%).
Regarding modes of transportation, Adita said that the majority of people are still choosing private vehicles for travel during this year's Nataru.
An estimated 39.97 million people, or 35.5% of the population, are expected to use four-wheeled private vehicles, while 20.14 million people, or 17.92%, will use two-wheeled vehicles.
According to Adita, this could lead to an increase in the volume of vehicles on toll roads and arterial roads. As a precautionary measure, Kemenhub, along with the Police and the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR), has issued a joint decree regarding traffic management during this year's Nataru.
Adita mentioned that the implemented traffic engineering includes contraflow on toll and non-toll roads.
Kemenhub made this Nataru travel prediction based on the results of a survey conducted from October 26 to November 2, 2023.
The survey used an online questionnaire distribution method via WhatsApp, Instagram, and SMS blasts, and involved several parties such as media outlets, the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), academics, and transportation practitioners.
