What's the difference in fares between online and conventional taxis?

The government will regulate upper and lower fare limits for app-based (online) taxi services such as Go-Jek, Grab, and Uber. This will be included in the revision of the Minister of Transportation Regulation Number 32 of 2016 concerning the Provision of Public Land Transportation Services using Motorized Vehicles not within a Route.

According to an iPrice study, current online taxi fares are significantly lower than conventional taxi fares, both for short distances (5 km) and long distances (20 km). The fare difference between online and conventional taxis can be double. In addition to ease of booking, numerous promotional fares have also boosted the popularity of online taxis. Currently, the number of online taxis operating in Indonesia has reached 11,000 units.

This fare limit policy is designed to ensure fair competition among taxi operators. Furthermore, the Ministry of Transportation states that online taxi companies will also be required to pay taxes. Online taxis will also be required to undergo mandatory vehicle inspection (KIR) and their drivers must possess a public service driving license (SIM A umum).
