PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), or KAI, reported that the volume of train passengers in the first half of 2024 reached 218.96 million people. This figure represents a 22% increase compared to the first half of last year, which transported 179.57 million passengers.
In the first half of this year, the highest number of passengers came from KAI Commuter, totaling 179.1 million passengers. Long-distance trains transported 22.22 million passengers, the LRT Jabodebek 8.6 million passengers, and local trains 3.51 million passengers. KAI Bandara carried 2.7 million passengers, and the Whoosh High-Speed Rail carried 2.6 million passengers.
According to KAI's VP of Public Relations, Anne Purba, the increase in passengers during this period was driven, in part, by the Train Travel Schedule (Gapeka) implemented since June 2023. Within the Gapeka, KAI operates various new trains, such as the Argo Merbabu (Gambir-Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng PP), Argo Semeru (Gambir-Surabaya Gubeng PP), Pandalungan (Gambir-Jember PP), Manahan (Gambir-Solo Balapan PP), and the local Banyubiru train (Semarang Tawang Bank Jateng-Solo Balapan PP).
New modes of transportation, namely the Whoosh and the LRT Jabodebek, which were inaugurated in the second half of 2023, also contributed.
Not only passenger numbers increased, but the punctuality of train departures and arrivals also improved. The on-time departure rate for trains in the first half of 2024 reached 99.76%, higher than the first half of 2023, which achieved 99.57%. The on-time arrival rate in the first half of this year reached 96.80%, up from 94.26% in the first half of 2023.
Anne stated that KAI will continue to improve punctuality across all train lines through improvements in operational performance, including the maintenance of facilities and infrastructure. "With these continuous efforts to improve quality, we hope that trains can become the primary choice for people traveling," said Anne in a written statement on Friday, July 12, 2024.
