England's powerhouse club, Manchester City, emerged as the champion of the 2022-2023 Champions League after defeating Inter Milan with a score of 1-0 on Sunday, June 11, 2023.
In addition to the trophy, the champion and other teams will also take home substantial prize money. According to *Sporting News*, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) allocated a total budget of €2.032 billion, or approximately Rp32.42 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,955 per Euro), as prize money for participants in the 2022-2023 Champions League.
As the winner, Manchester City will receive €20 million in prize money, approximately Rp319.21 billion. This amount does not include other bonuses.
Meanwhile, in the previous season, Real Madrid, the winner of the 2021/22 Champions League, received €83.2 million in prize money based on their performance in the Champions League matches, including an additional €4.5 million for winning the UEFA Super Cup in August 2022.
In this season's Champions League, a team that wins all its matches with a perfect performance in the group stage would receive a maximum prize money of €85.14 million.
However, neither Manchester City nor Inter Milan, the runner-up, managed to win all their group matches.
In this season's competition, 32 teams participated in the group stage and received an initial prize of €15.64 million.
The following is a breakdown of the prize money based on performance (55% of the total) in the 2022-2023 Champions League:
1. Winner: €20 million
2. Runner-up: €15.5 million
3. Semi-finalists: €12.5 million
4. Quarter-finalists: €10.6 million
5. Round of 16: €9.6 million
6. Group stage win: €2.8 million
7. Group stage draw: €930,000
8. Reaching the group stage: €15.64 million
55% of the total prize money was distributed to the clubs as a reward for their team's performance. The remaining 45% of the total prize money was distributed among the 32 participating clubs in two ways.
First, payment based on coefficient, which is 30% of the total paid to the 32 clubs based on their performance in Europe over the past 10 years. Then, based on broadcasting payments, which is 15% of the total.
