According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), from January to September 2022, wholesale sales of electric vehicles, specifically hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), in the domestic market reached 1,820 units.
The best-selling hybrid car during this period was the Toyota Corolla Cross 1.8 A/T Hybrid, with wholesale sales reaching 815 units.
Following that was the Nissan Kicks E-Power with 433 units sold wholesale, and the Toyota All New Camry 2.5 Hybrid with 692 units.
A hybrid car has two types of drive engines. First, a battery-based electric motor powered by deceleration, which is kinetic energy generated when the car brakes or reduces speed. Second, a conventional engine using gasoline.
The battery-based electric motor in a hybrid car is used when the car is traveling at low speeds. Then, if the battery runs out, the hybrid car's drive system automatically switches to the conventional engine.
According to a study by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, hybrid cars emit an average of 80 grams of CO2 per kilometer. This is significantly lower than conventional cars, which emit 240 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
However, hybrid car emissions are still higher than those of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). BEVs emit an average of only 5 grams of CO2 per kilometer.
