Based on data from Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Commuter, the number of passengers on electric commuter trains (KRL) specifically in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) has shown a downward trend. The steepest decline occurred during the implementation of the Emergency Community Activity Restrictions (PPKM) which began on Saturday, July 3, 2021.
KAI Commuter recorded only 200,059 passengers, a 24% decrease from the week before the PPKM. The number of passengers increased again by 82.6% on Monday, July 5, 2021, with 262,725 passengers. However, the trend declined again in the following days.
In the last month, the KRL recorded its lowest number of passengers on Monday, July 12, 2021, with 124,068 passengers. This figure decreased by 52.8% compared to the previous week because passengers were required to carry a Worker Registration Certificate (STRP) on that day. As a result, the majority of KRL users were workers in essential and critical sectors.
The government implemented the Emergency PPKM, specifically throughout the provinces of Java and Bali, to suppress the spread of the coronavirus from July 3 to 20, 2021. This policy was extended until August 2 under the name PPKM Level 4, so the STRP and other supporting documents remained valid as travel requirements.
KAI Commuter continues to implement operational pattern engineering. The operating hours of the Jabodetabek KRL are from 04.00 to 22.00 WIB. There are 982 KRL trips with 94 train sets. Each carriage is filled with a maximum of 52 passengers.
Passengers are required to follow a number of applicable health protocols to minimize the transmission of the coronavirus. Users must wear double masks (cloth and medical masks), KN95, N95, or KF94. In addition, maintaining distance, washing hands with soap, and refraining from talking during the trip are also mandatory policies.
