According to the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), Southeast Asian car sales reached 3.35 million units in 2023. This volume represents a 2.1% year-on-year (YoY) decrease compared to the previous year's 3.42 million units.
The AAF analyzed the performance of four-wheeled motor vehicle sales in seven Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Indonesia recorded the largest car market in Southeast Asia, with total sales exceeding 1 million units in 2023. This accounts for 30% of total car sales in the region. However, domestic car sales during this period fell by 4% (YoY).
Malaysia ranked second with car sales of 799,731 units, a 10.9% year-on-year (YoY) increase. Sales in Malaysia contributed 24% to the total Southeast Asian sales.
Thailand followed in third place, with 775,780 units sold. Sales decreased by 8.7%, with a 23% market share.
Other ASEAN countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Myanmar, recorded car sales of less than 500,000 units last year, as shown in the accompanying graph.
Car production in Southeast Asia in 2023 totaled 4.30 million units, down 1.9% compared to the previous year (YoY).
Indonesia was also the largest car producer in the region, with 6.80 million units produced throughout 2023. Malaysia had the lowest car production in Southeast Asia, with 549,481 units.
