To accelerate population mobility and reduce traffic congestion, the government is promoting the development of transportation infrastructure such as the MRT and LRT projects. Furthermore, in cooperation with the China Development Bank (CDB), the government also plans to build a Jakarta-Bandung high-speed railway. The value of this high-speed rail project reaches Rp 68 trillion.
The Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Phase I project, with a route from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI, requires Rp 17 trillion in funding, according to the Committee for Acceleration of Priority Infrastructure Provision. This project commenced in 2013 and is expected to be completed in 2018. Phase II, from Bundaran HI to Kampung Bandan, is estimated to cost Rp 22.5 trillion and will begin construction in 2018.
Meanwhile, the Light Rapid Transit (LRT) project connecting Jakarta, Bekasi, Depok, and Bogor requires Rp 23 trillion in funding. The Palembang LRT project, connecting Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport to Jakabaring Sport City, is estimated to cost Rp 8.5 trillion. Both LRT projects are intended to support transportation for the 2018 Asian Games held in Palembang and Jakarta.
