Canalys, a technology market research firm, reports that global sales of electric vehicles (EVs) reached 4.16 million units in the first half of 2022. Several brands dominated these sales.
BYD Automotive was the best-selling electric vehicle manufacturer in the first half of 2022. This Chinese manufacturer held a 15% global market share.
According to Canalys, BYD is a leading original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of electric vehicles. It sold 640,000 electric vehicles in the first half of 2022.
"This surge from sixth to first place is thanks to strong sales of models such as the BYD Song Plus, BYD Qin Plus, and BYD Han," said Canalys Chief Analyst Jason Low, as quoted from a press release on Thursday, August 11, 2022.
Tesla ranked second with a 14% global market share. Elon Musk's electric vehicle company contributed 565,000 electric vehicle sales during the same period.
SAIC Motor followed with a 9% global market share of electric vehicles, selling 393,000 units in the first half of 2022.
Volkswagen Group also held a 9% market share, selling 375,000 electric vehicles. Geely followed with a 6% global market share and sales of 121,000 electric vehicles. Other brands accounted for the remaining 47% of the market share.
The electric vehicles included in this report encompass battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs).
