Domestic Motorcycle Sales Plunge 46% in May 2021

The Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI) recorded national motorcycle sales of 254,710 units in May 2021. This figure represents a drastic 46% decrease compared to the previous month's 472,889 units.

However, motorcycle sales in May 2021 increased almost twelvefold compared to the same period last year. In May 2020, motorcycle sales plummeted to only 21,851 units due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Similar to domestic sales, Indonesia's motorcycle export volume also decreased month-on-month. The number reached 42,647 units in the fifth month of this year, 25.6% lower than April 2021's 57,306 units.

Year-on-year, Indonesia's motorcycle export volume in May 2021 increased approximately 6.5 times compared to the same period last year. In May 2020, motorcycle exports only reached 5,651 units.

Furthermore, 86.92% of domestically distributed motorcycles were scooters. Other types, such as underbone and sport motorcycles, had smaller distribution proportions, at 7.04% and 6.04%, respectively.

A similar trend occurred in export distribution. Scooters accounted for 68.3% of total motorcycle distribution, while sport motorcycles comprised 17.7% and underbone motorcycles 13.9%.
