The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs is planning to boost the potential of Indonesian tea exports.
"Potential markets for Indonesian tea exports include several countries, among others Malaysia, the USA, Pakistan, China, Europe, and Australia," explained Tatang Yuliono, Assistant Deputy for Trade Facilitation at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, on the ministry's official website on Tuesday (March 22).
"The current global market also prefers tea that is safe for consumption, which of course has been certified," he continued.
Indonesian Tea Exports are Weakening
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the performance of Indonesian tea exports is indeed declining.
Export volume fell by 32.29% to 4.83 thousand tons in 2021, compared to 7.13 thousand tons in the previous year.
The value of tea exports in 2021 also decreased by 35.88% to US$9.48 million, compared to US$14.79 million in the previous year.
In 2021, Germany was the largest export market for Indonesian tea, with export value of US$1.83 million. This figure represents 19.25% of the total national tea export value.
The next largest export was to the Netherlands with a value of US$1.39 million, followed by Taiwan at US$986,93 thousand, India at US$856.26 thousand, and Russia at US$682.92 thousand.
Following these were the United Arab Emirates with tea exports from Indonesia valued at US$663.94 thousand; Poland at US$639.32 thousand; Egypt at US$453.2 thousand; and the United States and Pakistan at US$385.3 thousand and US$354.7 thousand respectively.
Throughout 2021, the value of Indonesian tea exports to Australia fell by 92.22% to only US$10.96 thousand. Similarly, exports to Singapore and Vietnam fell by 77.92% and 77.72% respectively.
