Indonesia's Exports to Timor-Leste Reached US$221 Million in 2020

Timor-Leste is a potential future export market for Indonesia. Its geographical proximity and its history as part of Indonesia could foster a strong emotional connection among Timor-Leste's people towards Indonesian products.

Indonesia's exports to Timor-Leste grew by 5% year-on-year (yoy) to US$221.34 million in 2020, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). However, this only represents 0.14% of Indonesia's total exports of US$163.19 billion.

Specifically, Indonesian exports to Timor-Leste via sea transport reached US$205.32 million (92.76%). Exports via land transport amounted to US$15.84 million (7.15%).

Exports via air transport totaled US$175,000 (0.08%), while those via post amounted to US$7,400 (0.003%).

In terms of volume, Indonesian exports to Timor-Leste decreased by 3.85% (yoy) to 432.06 tons in 2020. This represents only 0.07% of Indonesia's total exports of 579.68 million tons.

Specifically, the volume of exports via sea transport decreased by 1.59% to 374.79 tons. The volume of exports via land transport decreased by 16.35% to 57.22 tons.

The volume of exports via air transport decreased by 53.75% to 63.79 tons. Meanwhile, the volume of exports via post plummeted by 84.64% to 123 kilograms.

For information, Timor-Leste is one of the countries that directly borders Indonesia and is accessible by land transport. Therefore, Indonesian exports to Timor-Leste contribute 29% to the total exports using land transport.
