Indomaret and Alfamart are highly popular small-scale modern retail stores, or minimarkets, in Indonesia.
Indomaret and Alfamart outlets are often located close to each other, highlighting the intense competition between the two stores.
According to Euromonitor data cited by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Indomaret consistently generated higher sales revenue than Alfamart from 2018 to 2021.
However, in 2022, Alfamart achieved sales revenue of USD 7.62 billion, narrowly surpassing Indomaret's USD 7.6 billion.
This marks Alfamart's first victory in the last five years, as shown in the graph above.
The USDA also projects continued growth for the minimarket business in Indonesia in general.
"Small-scale supermarkets are expected to remain the fastest-growing retail segment in Indonesia, with an average of 1,000 new stores per year," stated the USDA in its July 2023 edition of *Indonesia: Retail Foods*.
"In recent years, large chains such as Indomaret, Alfamart, Lawson, and Family Mart have transformed their stores, expanding from offering only daily necessities to include ready-to-eat meals," it continued.
"Although these kiosk-sized stores only sell a few imported products, such as fruits, confectionery, snacks, and beverages, their large number of outlets offers broad prospects," the USDA added.
