In 2022, Indonesia's salt imports reached 2.75 million tons, valued at US$124.4 million.

Australia was the largest supplier last year, sending 1.9 million tons of salt to Indonesia, worth US$92.43 million.

BPS also records that Australia has consistently been the largest supplier of salt to Indonesia since 2017.

India ranked second, supplying 751,300 tons of salt to Indonesia last year, valued at an estimated US$29.3 million.

New Zealand and China followed, with total salt shipments to Indonesia of 4,300 tons and 1,300 tons respectively.

Imports from other countries totaled 180.5 tons, valued at US$55,300.

In response to the high volume of salt imports, President Joko Widodo plans to increase domestic salt production.

This is outlined in Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 126/2022 on the Acceleration of National Salt Development, enacted on October 27, 2022.

The regulation states that national salt needs must be met from domestic salt production by salt farmers and businesses by 2024 at the latest.

Imports are only permitted to meet the needs of the chemical or chlor-alkali industry.
