The United States, the World's Largest Spice Market in 2020

The United States (US) is the world's largest spice market, accounting for 12.87% of the global market share, according to a report by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The value of global spice imports into the US reached US$3.28 billion, or approximately Rp 46.64 trillion in 2020 (using an exchange rate of US$1 = Rp 14,222).

The value of global spice imports into the US grew by 8.75% year-on-year (y-o-y). In 2019, the value of global spice imports to the US was US$3.01 billion.

Germany holds the second-largest spice market share, with imports valued at US$1.38 billion. The United Kingdom imported US$1.35 billion worth of spices, followed by France and Canada with US$1.08 billion and US$986.93 million respectively.

China, the Netherlands, and Saudi Arabia imported US$957.90 million, US$921.14 million, and US$826.4 million worth of spices respectively. Japan and India imported US$637.14 million and US$637.08 million respectively.

Global spice imports totaled US$25.46 billion in 2020, an 8.19% y-o-y increase. This indicates that consumer demand for spices remained positive despite the global recessionary pressures caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Indonesia was one of the world's largest spice suppliers in 2020. Its spice exports reached US$1.02 billion throughout the year, ranking ninth globally.
