Several Countries Halt Wheat Exports; Indonesia's Wheat Imports January-May 2022

Several countries, including India, Kazakhstan, Serbia, and Ukraine, have halted wheat exports to secure their domestic food supplies. This will further limit the global wheat supply and could trigger a surge in wheat prices.

Indonesia is one of the countries that must import wheat to meet its domestic needs.

According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), Indonesia's imports of wheat and meslin reached 4.36 million tons, valued at US$1.65 billion, from January to May 2022.

Indonesia's largest wheat imports came from Australia, reaching 1.57 million tons valued at US$585.6 million in the first five months of this year. This volume represents 36% of Indonesia's total wheat imports.

The next largest source of Indonesian wheat imports was Argentina, at 1.41 million tons valued at US$497 million, followed by Canada with 572,600 tons valued at US$276.14 million.

Indonesia also imported wheat from Brazil (594,260 tons valued at US$211.24 million), India (115,860 tons valued at US$40.47 million), and other countries (98,150 tons valued at US$36.9 million).

Furthermore, Indonesia imported 26,900 tons of wheat and meslin flour valued at US$10.84 million in the first five months of this year. The largest source of these imports was India, at 22,970 tons valued at US$8.95 million.
