Bicycle Riding Booms, Indonesian Bicycle Exports Reach Rp2.9 Trillion

Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the trend of "gowes" (cycling) has strengthened globally. This is evident in the increasing bicycle sales both domestically and internationally.

In 2020, bicycle sales in Indonesia increased almost fivefold compared to the pre-Covid-19 period.

Throughout 2021, Indonesian bicycle exports to the global market also increased dramatically compared to the previous year.

According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the total volume of national bicycle exports during the January-November 2021 period amounted to 11.71 million kg. This volume increased by 54.79% compared to exports in the same period of 2020, which amounted to 7.56 million kg.

The total value of national bicycle exports also surged by 97.43%, from US$103.4 million in 2020 to US$204.15 million (approximately Rp2.925 trillion) in 2021.

Indonesian Bicycle Export Destinations

During the January-November 2021 period, the largest destination for Indonesian bicycle exports was the United Kingdom, with a volume of 2.65 million kg (total value US$39.74 million). This was followed by the United States with a volume of 2.56 million kg (US$58.1 million).

Indonesia also exported bicycles to Denmark (1.19 million kg, US$12.78 million), Sweden (814,700 kg, US$8.43 million), and Canada (413,300 kg, US$9.19 million).

The cycling trend has strengthened during the pandemic because this sport is considered relatively safe from the risk of Covid-19 transmission. Cycling can be done outdoors, involves no physical contact, is beneficial for maintaining physical fitness, and can alleviate boredom during lockdowns.
