According to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), 64 countries were recorded exporting or selling weapons to other countries during the 2020-2024 period.
The largest arms exporters were the United States, France, Russia, China, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Israel, Spain, and South Korea.
Collectively, these countries accounted for almost 89% of total global arms exports over the past five years.
Below is a breakdown of the top 10 largest arms exporting countries during the 2020-2024 period, along with their main export destinations.
1. United States (US)
The US accounted for 43% of total global arms exports during 2020-2024. During this period, the US sent the most weapons to Saudi Arabia (12% of its total exports), Ukraine (9.3%), and Japan (8.8%).
2. France
Throughout 2020-2024, France accounted for 9.6% of global arms exports. During this period, France sent the most weapons to India (28% of its total exports), Qatar (9.7%), and Greece (8.3%).
3. Russia
In 2020-2024, Russia accounted for 7.8% of global arms exports. During this period, Russia sent the most weapons to India (38% of its total exports), China (17%), and Kazakhstan (11%).
4. China
During 2020-2024, China accounted for 5.9% of global arms exports. During this period, China sent the most weapons to Pakistan (63% of its total exports), Serbia (6.8%), and Thailand (4.6%).
5. Germany
Throughout 2020-2024, Germany accounted for 5.6% of global arms exports. During this period, Germany sent the most weapons to Ukraine (19% of its total exports), Egypt (19%), and Israel (11%).
6. Italy
In 2020-2024, Italy accounted for 4.8% of global arms exports. During this period, Italy sent the most weapons to Qatar (28% of its total exports), Egypt (18%), and Kuwait (18%).
7. United Kingdom
During 2020-2024, the United Kingdom accounted for 3.6% of global arms exports. During this period, the UK sent the most weapons to Qatar (28% of its total exports), the US (16%), and Ukraine (10%).
8. Israel
Throughout 2020-2024, Israel accounted for 3.1% of global arms exports. During this period, Israel sent the most weapons to India (34% of its total exports), the US (13%), and the Philippines (8.1%).
9. Spain
In 2020-2024, Spain accounted for 3% of global arms exports. During this period, Spain sent the most weapons to Saudi Arabia (24% of its total exports), Australia (18%), and Turkey (13%).
10. South Korea
During 2020-2024, South Korea accounted for 2.2% of global arms exports. During this period, South Korea sent the most weapons to Poland (46% of its total exports), the Philippines (14%), and India (7%).
