Many unhappy countries are located in Africa. This is recorded in the *World Happiness Report 2025* released by Gallup.
Gallup routinely conducts surveys on public happiness in various countries, with approximately 1,000 respondents per country per year.
Respondents were asked to rate their happiness on a scale of 0-10. The higher the score, the better their living conditions.
Using this method, in 2025 Afghanistan ranked last out of 147 surveyed countries, with an average score of 1.364 out of 10.
Among the lowest global happiness index rankings are also 7 African countries: Sierra Leone, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Comoros, and Lesotho, with scores as shown in the graph.
The 2025 score is the average of the survey scores from the past three years.
"Our 2025 ranking is based on combined data from 2022 to 2024. With a sample of 3,000 people per country (accumulated sample over three years), it provides a more accurate estimate and reduces errors in random sampling," said Gallup in an explanation on its website.
