Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the volume of imported textiles and textile goods entering Indonesia throughout 2023 reached 1.96 million tons, down 9.1% compared to 2022 (year-on-year/yoy).

Category XI comprises a combination of commodities including silk, wool, cotton, textile fibers, filaments, staple fibers, woven fabrics, knitted fabrics, carpets, knitted garments/accessories, non-knitted garments/accessories, and various other textile products, including used clothing.

Over the past decade, the volume of imported textiles and textile goods entering Indonesia has fluctuated between 1.8 million and 2.5 million tons per year.

The Indonesian Textile Association (API) is now urging the Ministry of Trade (Kemendag) to revoke regulations that facilitate imports, particularly Trade Minister Regulation Number 8 of 2024.

According to API, this regulation eliminates the requirement for technical considerations (pertek) for several products, allowing imported textile products to enter Indonesia more freely.

"Before the pertek was removed, any imported ready-to-wear clothing without a brand and not in Indonesian could not enter," said API Deputy Chairman David Leonardi to Katadata on Monday (June 17, 2024).

"If this continues, the [local] textile industry will go bankrupt. Our country will become a trading nation, not a producer," he added.
