The European Union and the UK announced aid packages for Palestinians on Monday, October 16, 2023, via their respective official government websites.
On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, a similar aid announcement came from Iceland, a country ranked as the most peaceful in the world according to the Global Peace Index.
The European Union pledged €75 million (approximately Rp1.2 trillion, assuming an exchange rate of Rp16,628 per euro) in aid for Palestinians.
The UK announced £10 million (approximately Rp191.4 billion, assuming an exchange rate of Rp19,141 per pound sterling) in aid.
Iceland provided US$500,000 (approximately Rp7.9 billion, assuming an exchange rate of Rp15,709 per US dollar).
Prior to this, between October 8 and 16, 2023, five other countries—the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Scotland—announced similar aid following the outbreak of the Israel-Palestine war.
These five countries, along with Iceland, will channel their aid through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
The European Union will deliver its aid in cooperation with the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). The aid is planned to be flown to Egypt and then transported to Gaza via land.
The UK stated it will distribute aid through its partner organizations, including UN agencies, without providing further details.
Israel Still Blocks Aid
Despite the increasing number of donor countries, aid supplies for Palestinians, typically sent through Egypt, have been unable to reach Gaza due to Israeli obstruction.
Reuters reported on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, that the Egyptian government stated Israel is not cooperating in the delivery of aid to Gaza, resulting in hundreds of tons of supplies being held up.
Reuters further reported that Israel has not yet opened the Rafah crossing (a Palestinian city in the Gaza Strip bordering Egypt) to allow the entry of aid and the evacuation of civilians.
Reuters also reported that hundreds of tons of supplies from various non-governmental organizations are currently being held up due to similar issues.
“We are waiting for the green light for the entry of aid, and dozens of volunteers are ready at any time,” said a team from the international humanitarian organization Red Crescent, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.
