Foreign Tourist Visits to Jakarta Soar 2,000% in July 2022

The tourism sector in Jakarta is gradually recovering. This is evident from a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) showing that the number of foreign tourist visits (wisman) to the capital reached 119,197 in July 2022.

The number of foreign tourist visits to Jakarta in July 2022 increased by 39.3% compared to the previous month (m-to-m). In June 2022, the number of foreign tourist visits to Jakarta reached 85,587.

Meanwhile, the number of foreign tourist visits in July 2022 surged dramatically compared to July 2021, reaching 2,078.7% (y-o-y). In July 2021, foreign tourist visits to Jakarta were recorded at only 5,471 due to the surge in Covid-19 cases the previous year.

Based on the point of entry, 119,179 foreign tourists arrived in Jakarta via Soekarno-Hatta Airport. Only 18 foreign tourists arrived via Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport.

According to BPS, the number of foreign tourist visits to Jakarta has consistently increased since the beginning of 2022. "The increasingly controlled pandemic is attracting foreign tourists to visit Jakarta, especially during the summer holidays, which saw the highest peak in foreign tourist visits," according to the BPS report on Thursday (1/9/2022).

Based on nationality, the highest number of foreign tourist visits to Jakarta in July 2022 was dominated by Malaysia, with 10,877 visits or 9.1% of the total visits. This was followed by Saudi Arabia with 9,898 visits (8.3%), Singapore with 7,204 visits (6%), the Netherlands with 7,021 visits (5.9%), and China with 6,663 visits (5.6%).

Cumulatively from January to July 2022, the number of foreign tourist visits recorded was 351,500 to Jakarta. Compared to the same period the previous year, this represents a 443.9% increase.
