Ipsos and UNESCO conducted a survey in 16 countries regarding sources considered breeding grounds for fake news or hoaxes.

The results show that the majority, or 68% of respondents, believe hoaxes spread most widely on social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, X/Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and others.

Online messaging apps such as WhatsApp, Telegram, and others were also considered major vehicles for the spread of hoaxes by 38% of respondents.

Furthermore, 20% of respondents considered fake news to be widely disseminated on news websites/apps, 19% on television, and 11% believed hoaxes spread widely through discussions with friends, family, or colleagues.

Meanwhile, 10% of respondents considered newspapers/magazines to be significant spreaders of hoaxes, while radio had the smallest proportion at 4%.

This survey involved 8,000 respondents aged 18 and above, spread across 16 countries (500 respondents per country). The survey locations were countries holding general elections in 2024, including Indonesia.

Data collection was conducted from August 22 to September 25, 2023, through online interviews, and each respondent could select a maximum of two answers.
