Indonesia's Internet Penetration Remains Low

Indonesia's internet penetration rate is relatively low compared to other Asian countries. According to Internet World Stats data from June 2016, the percentage of Indonesians accessing the internet relative to the total population was very low at 34.1%, ranking 23rd out of 34 surveyed countries. Compared to other ASEAN countries, Indonesia's internet penetration rate is also lower than that of Singapore, Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Indonesia's archipelagic nature means that populations in remote areas lack access to the internet, contributing to the low penetration rate. Furthermore, low literacy rates and limited technological knowledge hinder the growth of internet penetration in the country.

South Korea has the highest internet penetration rate in Asia at 92.1% of the total population, followed by Japan at 91%. North Korea, on the other hand, has the lowest internet penetration rate in Asia, at only 0.1%.
