Social media has become the easiest means of sharing information and news, used by almost all segments of society. The 2021 Indonesian Digital Literacy Status Report states that out of approximately 10,000 respondents spread across 34 provinces, 98.9 percent use WhatsApp and 89.8 percent use Facebook as social media applications.

Furthermore, the report also reveals to whom information is shared. Approximately 74 percent of respondents admitted to sharing news or information with family and relatives, followed by 58 percent sharing information with close friends, and then 30 percent sharing information with their partners.

Neighbors and the residential community are the next targets for information dissemination, with a percentage of around 17 percent. This is followed by limited groups such as community groups (9.7 percent), alumni groups (7.6 percent), and office groups (5.1 percent). The remaining 1.1 percent falls into the "other" category.

Interestingly, a very small percentage of respondents, only 0.4 percent, claimed not to share information or news obtained through social media.

This demonstrates the increasingly dominant role of social media as a means of disseminating information and news, especially to the closest groups, such as family and close friends.
