An International Data Corporation (IDC) report shows that global smartphone shipments reached 1.2 billion units, down 11.3% year-on-year (YoY).

During this period, three Chinese smartphone brands recorded the sharpest decline: Vivo, Oppo, and Xiaomi.

Specifically, Vivo's smartphone shipments fell 22.8% YoY from 128.3 million units to 99 million units in 2022. Oppo's smartphone shipments contracted by 22.7% YoY, from 133.6 million units to 103.3 million units.

Xiaomi recorded a 19.8% YoY decrease in smartphone shipments, from 191 million units to 153.1 million units.

Conversely, the decline in Apple and Samsung smartphone shipments was the lowest globally last year. The US and South Korean brands experienced a 4% and 4.1% YoY decrease, respectively. Other smartphone brands also experienced a 9.1% contraction.

Nabila Popal, research director of IDC's Worldwide Tracker team, said the decline was due to weakening smartphone demand while inventory remained high. As a result, vendors drastically reduced shipments.

Furthermore, according to Nabila, the decrease in global smartphone shipments was influenced by inflation and rising global macroeconomic concerns, hindering consumer spending.

Nabila predicts that vendors will be more cautious in preparing smartphone inventory this year. They will reconsider their portfolio of devices or new smartphones in 2023.

"However, on a positive note, consumers can expect more generous trade-in offers and promotions continuing into 2023 as the market explores new methods to drive upgrades and sell more devices, especially high-end models," said Nabila, as quoted from a press release on Wednesday (25/1/2023).
