Based on data from the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF), car sales in Southeast Asia reached 2,188,497 units during the January-August 2023 period.
Sales volume increased by 0.5% compared to January-August last year (year-on-year/yoy).
The AAF analyzed the performance of four-wheeled motor vehicle sales in seven Southeast Asian countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Indonesia recorded the largest car market in Southeast Asia with sales of 675,287 units during the January-August 2023 period. This is equivalent to 30.85% of total car sales in the region.
Car sales in Indonesia during this period also increased by 2.6% (yoy).
In second place is Thailand with four-wheeled vehicle sales of 524,784 units, down 6.2% (yoy). Sales in Thailand account for 23.99% of total sales in Southeast Asia.
Malaysia follows in third place with car sales of 501,552 units. Sales increased by 11.6% (yoy), with a market share of 22.91%.
Meanwhile, other ASEAN countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, and Myanmar recorded car sales of less than 500,000 units, as shown in the graph.
Car production in Southeast Asia from January to August 2023 reached 2,849,888 units, up 3.4% compared to January-August last year.
Indonesia is also the second largest car producer in the region, with 947,776 units produced from January to August 2023. Thailand is above it with production of 1,221,878 units in the same period.
