Mobile phones are currently the most widely used communication tool. The number of subscribers even exceeds Indonesia's total population of 270.2 million. Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the number of mobile phone network users reached 355.6 million subscribers in 2020. This figure grew by 4.2% compared to the previous year's 341.27 million.
According to their payment method, 345.95 million (97.28%) of mobile phone subscribers use prepaid methods. There are also 9.67 million (2.76%) mobile phone subscribers using postpaid methods.
Mobile network operators operating in Indonesia are PT Telekomunikasi Seluler (Telkomsel), PT Indosat Ooredoo Tbk, and PT XL Axiata Tbk. There are also PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia, PT Smartfren Telecom Tbk, and PT Sampoerna Telekomunikasi Indonesia.
For information, PT Indosat Ooredoo Tbk and PT Hutchison 3 Indonesia have agreed to merge and become the new entity PT Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison Tbk last September.
Telkomsel is the mobile operator with the most subscribers, reaching 169.2 million subscribers in June 2021. Indosat Ooredoo has 60.3 million subscribers, and XL-Axiata has 56.77 million subscribers.
