LSI: Television and Social Media are the Most Popular Sources for COVID-19 News

The majority of Indonesians rely on television as their primary source of information on the Covid-19 pandemic. Social media is also a very popular source for updates on the pandemic, as shown in a survey by the Indonesian Survey Institute (LSI).

The majority of respondents, or 75.3% of the population, stated that they watch television for news about Covid-19, while 24.6% said they do not use television as their primary source. WhatsApp is the second most popular source of Covid-19 information among Indonesians, with 40.2% of respondents using it.

Other internet platforms are also widely used to access pandemic information, including Facebook (33.9%), search engines (30.1%), and Instagram (20.2%). Twitter is used by 8.6% of respondents, followed by TikTok at 7.3%.

Only a small percentage of the population still relies on print media for information about Covid-19. Only 10% of respondents said they read newspapers to get news about the pandemic.

The LSI conducted a national telephone survey from June 20-25, 2021. The research involved 1,200 randomly selected respondents from all provinces in Indonesia. The survey's margin of error is ±2.88% with a 95% confidence level.
