The Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI) reports an estimated 1,645 cases of childhood diabetes mellitus in January 2023. According to *Katadata*, this equates to two cases per 100,000 children.
This figure represents a 70-fold increase in cases since 2010. The majority of affected children are located in Jakarta and Surabaya, East Java, with an estimated 60% being girls.
Olivia Herlinda from the Center for Indonesia’s Strategic Development Initiatives (CISDI) attributes this surge to several factors: increased consumption of sugary drinks, exposure to their advertising, changing lifestyles, and weak regulations. "We see this as a major risk factor for the public," she told *Katadata* on Thursday, February 9, 2023.
Understanding public awareness of sugary drinks is crucial. Research by Kurious from the Katadata Insight Center reveals that Coca-Cola is the most recognized soft drink brand, with 82.4% of respondents recognizing it. Teh Pucuk follows with 81.6%, then Sprite (81.2%), Fanta (80.4%), and Frestea (71.8%).
Among the brands mentioned by respondents, six were carbonated soft drinks and five were teas.
The Kurious survey involved 725 respondents in total, with 225 specifically for soft drinks. The online CAWI (Computer-Assisted Web Interviewing) methodology was employed between January 2nd and 13th, 2023. The margin of error is 3.64% with a 95% confidence level.
