The Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) analyzed internet penetration and contribution rates on Indonesia's major islands at the beginning of 2024.
Java had the highest penetration and contribution rates among the five largest islands. Penetration reached 83.64%, and its contribution was 57.82%.
Sumatra followed with 77.34% penetration and a 20.69% contribution.
Kalimantan had slightly higher penetration than Sumatra at 77.42%, but its contribution was only 6.12%.
Bali and Nusa Tenggara had a penetration rate of 71.80%, but their contribution was only 5.12%.
Sulawesi had a penetration rate of 68.35% and a contribution of 6.47%, while Maluku-Papua had 69.91% penetration and a 3.79% contribution.
Overall, Indonesia's internet penetration rate reached 79.5% of the total population at the beginning of 2024.
This equates to 221,563,479 individuals out of Indonesia's total population of 278,696,200 in 2023.
The 2024 penetration rate increased by 1.31% or 6 million users year-on-year (YoY) compared to 78.19% in 2023.
By gender, internet penetration was higher among men at 87.6%, with a contribution/usage of 50.9%.
Women's internet penetration was 85.5%, contributing 49.1%.
By generation, millennials had the highest internet penetration at 93.17% in 2024, but their contribution was 30.62%.
Millennials' contribution was lower than Generation Z's. Generation Z had 87.02% internet penetration and a 34.40% contribution.
Generation X had 83.69% penetration and an 18.98% contribution; Baby Boomers had 60.52% penetration and a 6.58% contribution; Post-Gen Z had 48.10% penetration and a 9.17% contribution; and Pre-Boomers had 32% penetration and a 0.24% contribution.
The generational birth ranges are as follows: Post-Gen Z (after 2013); Gen Z (1997-2012); Millennials (1981-1996); Gen X (1965-1980); Baby Boomers (1946-1964); Pre-Boomers (before 1945).
