Mobile phones have become an essential part of daily life. According to a survey by Alvara Research Center, the majority of Generation Z even consider bringing a mobile phone when traveling more important than bringing a wallet.

Sixty-three point eight percent (63.8%) of Generation Z chose a mobile phone as an indispensable item. Only 36.2% prioritized a wallet.

While not dominant, a significant number of millennials share this view, as shown in the graph.

According to Alvara Research, this trend emerges because various features of smartphones can replace wallets, for example, through digital wallets and mobile banking.

"There is a unique anxiety or unease among young people if they leave behind or even lose their smartphone, because the smartphone has become integrated with their lives," wrote Alvara Research in its report.

Meanwhile, respondents from the millennial and Generation X groups mostly preferred a wallet as an indispensable item, with percentages of 52.4% and 60.3%, respectively.

This survey was conducted through face-to-face interviews with 1,529 respondents from Generation Z, millennials, and Generation X across Indonesia. The survey was conducted from March 20 to 31, 2022, and the sample was selected using multistage random sampling.
