The International Telecommunication Union (ITU)'s 2020 Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) report shows that Indonesia's cybersecurity capabilities still lag behind those of Singapore and Malaysia.
Indonesia scored 94.88 out of 100, placing it 24th globally, an improvement from its 41st position in 2018. The United States ranked first with a perfect score of 100.
In Southeast Asia, Indonesia ranked third, behind Singapore (98.52) and Malaysia (98.06).
Indonesia's cybersecurity ranking surpasses other ASEAN countries, including Vietnam (94.5), Thailand (86.5), the Philippines (77), and Brunei Darussalam (56.07). Indonesia also outperforms Myanmar (36.41), Laos (20.34), and Cambodia (19.12).
Cybersecurity is crucial in today's digital age, where not only information but also a significant portion of financial transactions are conducted electronically.
Government and private institutions holding public data must enhance their data security measures to prevent data breaches by unauthorized parties. Recently, there were viral reports about the Russian Conti Ransomware hacking group successfully breaching Bank Indonesia's data.
